Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Sarah Atwell, 16, is a Windsor area teen who has been bullied and ridiculed at school for years because of her appearance. She says that she has difficulty leaving the house some days, dreading the taunts and off-hand remarks she endures on an almost daily basis and often leaves school early, unable to cope. Her condition, neurofibromatosis, is a genetic disorder that causes tumours in tissues that surround nerves throughout the body. I contemplated many different approaches as I listened to her speak during an interview, settling on a simple, natural pose using available light as my main source. After listening to Sarah describe her situation and experiences, it was clear to me that she's a regular teenager coping with extraordinary difficulty, which is what I tried to convey in the image. |
