Short explanation of the story and how it developed: This image is a part of a series called 'Bodies of Work' that featured a variety of subjects of varying ages and backgrounds with one thing in common – they made physical fitness a pivotal part of their lives. Matt Ryan, a former national-level gymnast and current fitness buff, is a man with a unique talent to perform handstands almost anywhere. For our shoot, we decided on using Peggy's Cove as our backdrop. Although it was late summer, the weather was uncharacteristically cold and windy – very windy. Fortunately, Matt was able to perform handstand after handstand over a period of more than 45 minutes as we worked towards an image showing a perfect sunset married with a perfect pose. Because of the high winds, the image was made with very basic lighting, instead relying on composition, timing, and use of the natural environment for impact. |
