Short explanation of the story and how it developed: My passion for story telling is intense. I strive to dig up stories that will make a difference in people's lives. Many of my stories have changed government and corporate policies. Most recently, my investigation into thermography prompted swift government action involving breast cancer screening in Canada. Within hours of our story airing, Provincial Governments issued cease and desist orders and the Federal Government brought in new rules. Big or small, I can find a story in everyday situations. Wherever I am, whatever I am doing, I am always critically analysing every interaction. At the grocery store when a blind woman talks about how her apartment is infested with bed bugs, people move away from her. I move in to find out more. The bed bug story that is included in this body of work gave us two weeks of programming on all platforms. The provincial government intervened and the characters in the story have now been placed in alternative homes. Since becoming a journalist, I have expanded my social media presence. Facebook and Twitter have become my most valuable sources. I first met Chancey Miller's parents through a facebook group. They wanted to know why their little girl died while in the care of the province and they were reaching out to anyone who would listen. I helped give the Miller's a voice. Before I told their story, the Department of Child Youth and Family Services was ignoring their calls. They could not find out how and why their three year old daughter died. After our story aired, the Miller's were given access to their child's death report and the province began a review into her case. The stories I have shared have uncovered deceptive processes and changed public policies. |
