Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

In the summer of 2011, a Globalnews.ca staff member visited some of the Titanic victim graves in Halifax. He noticed several that were tended to with fresh flowers and other artifacts. That led to the question: 100 years later, who is still so affected by the tragedy to be doing this? Answering that question became the purpose of our “Voyage of the Titanic” microsite. We combined a rich interactive online experience charting the Titanic’s fateful voyage with a call to action to our audience via our website, Global National broadcasts and on social media: Tell us your Titanic stories. Because the saga of Titanic is bound up with the history of Halifax, NS, the city at the epicenter of the recovery effort after the sinking. A century ago its residents came together to offer safe haven for families of victims, to recover hundreds of bodies, and offer a final resting place to most of them. We received dozens of responses and turned the best of those into stories for both online and broadcast. We further shared these stories across our social media networks. We heard from many people across all walks of life: a young girl with autism who identified closely with one of the Titanic’s musicians and tends his grave today, to the Halifax resident who told a poignant story of how her grandfather was forever haunted by his participation in the body recovery effort.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

A team of seven globalnews.ca staff worked on content and development of this special feature, over the course of several weeks. But, the majority of the stories, photos and videos were produced and published in the two weeks surrounding the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
