Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Like a comfortable slipper, Saltscapes covers tend to have a predictable template—and coverlines are usually along the left-hand side. With the subject being front and centre, this image offered us a fun departure—running coverlines on both sides—while still maintaining the characteristic Saltscapes look and feel. Overall the image is a simple, in your face portrait; a friendly and inviting glimpse of a local business and industry. It was posed and specifically lit for the cover—as opposed to the more candid approach used for the story inside. The shanty/shack was chosen not only for its beauty but to provide a clean background. The limited colour palette of the background and the worker’s wardrobe draws the eye to him, and allows clean space for the text. Featuring a real worker versus a model depicts authenticity, a quality that is part of Saltscapes’ mandate. The coverline “Million Dollar Legs” is meant to reflect the financial significance of the crab leg industry in Nova Scotia, drawing the reader in with its colourful, contrasting expression—sexy legs versus hard, smelly work. |
