Short explanation of the story and how it developed: In the first few paragraphs of the story, I describe Fadi announcing to a room of friends that he is going to marry his cousin. I was one of the people in that room, who stared blankly in response. The topic didn’t come up again until months later, when I decided to write about cousin marriage for a narrative non-fiction class at school. I sent Fadi a message, asking if he would be comfortable talking to me about his thoughts about marrying his cousin. He was happy to. Every time we talked, the issue got more complex and human, and evoked evermore questions. Those questions led me to a geographer, some doctors, Access Nova Scotia and a mother who lost her daughter. My instructor, Lezlie Lowe, and my classmates were instrumental in helping me develop the story. In the end, I don’t think that any of the most important questions could have been answered, but, hopefully, more people were asking them. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: The story was completed as a school project, with no resources available (except for Lezlie Lowe's exceptional instruction). |
