Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

I learned about Canadian actor Maxim Mazumdar when putting together a supplement for the Georgian newspaper five years ago, but a nagging feeling persisted as I couldn't find out much about the man or what led him to set up a professional theatre company in Stephenville, NL, in the 1970s. After speaking to the late actor's brother this past summer, I knew I had the beginnings of an important story and took it upon myself to write Mr. Mazumdar’s life story. I tracked down and interviewed several intimate friends and fellow thespians, and gathered enough information to write a truly comprehensive article. The finished piece not only details Mr. Mazumdar’s life and work locally, nationally and internationally -- it also highlights Stephenville Theatre Festival’s place in Canadian theatre history.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Due to a staff shortage at the Georgian, I transcribed interviews and wrote the article at home during evenings and weekends, which took an estimated 115 “after-work” hours to complete.
