Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The Long Goodbye cover illustrates the deeply personal story by writer John DeMont about his parents' battle with dementia. We decided early on that illustrations would be a more personal approach to telling the story but one that would not be intrusive. The illustration conveys Mrs. DeMont's status in one simple drawing; the headline cleary states the main theme of the story and the clean design allows the artwork to speak for itself. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: Russell Jackson was hired as a freelance illustrator for the story He spent many days and long hours with the subject of the story. |
