Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

We had heard of some aspects of Brendan Maguire's incredible story when he was running as a Liberal candidate in last year's Nova Scotia election. Abandoned in a shopping mall as a young child, Brendan had to overcome incredible odds to get where he is today. But as we researched his story, we discovered that Brendan has a brother in prison for murder. Though many people knew about it, Brendan had never spoken about it publicly. I met with Brendan for coffee, and we agreed that if we told his story, we would tell the whole story : criminal brother and all. The result is, we think, an inspirational look and an uncommon politician.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

There was little time freed up for us to work on this story outside of our daily news responsibilities. We got together with CBC national radio and TV news. This allowed to combine budgets from various departments in order to get the job done.
