Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Munn's portrait of 2013 Sobey Art Award shortlisted artist Tamara Henderson, although taken during a photo shoot, isn't staged, it is portraiture at its best. Munn captured the essence of the artist's work and personality, not easy given Henderson's esoteric practice. The artist's work is subtle and conceptually challenging, inspired by dreams and unconscious states, and addressing multiple personalities and alternate realities -- all concerns that resonate in Munn's photograph in its composition, creative and subtle use of reflection and bleached colour tone. Adding to the achievement is the fact that Munn was able to achieve such narrative and composition with a vertical image, which is more demanding than the horizontal format. |
