Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

‘An eye for it’ developed in advance of the exhibition ‘The Leslie B. Marcus Collection: A Gift To The Beaverbrook Art Gallery,’ which ran from Feb. 27 to June 8, 2014. As its title explains, the exhibition was a display of the private art collection of Leslie Marcus, who once called Saint John home, but now lives in Nova Scotia. Elderly, he wanted to get rid of his collection, and donated his collected work to the gallery to do as they pleased. Mike Landry, then The Telegraph-Journal’s arts and culture editor, used the exhibition to delve into a topic that permeates many stories he had previously written about the visual arts -- what is it that drives art collectors, and how much of a role do they play in art communities? However, most stories about art collectors focus on the wealthy or those privileged by having intimate connections with artists. Leslie Marcus, though, neither wealthy or connected, offered a delightfully odd perspective, one that revealed the heart of the collector’s compulsion. To write the story, Landry decided to visit Marcus in his home after his art collection had been taken down and transported to the gallery. He rented a car, took the Digby ferry, and spent the day with Marcus in Annapolis Royal. Landry also visited Fredericton to see Marcus’ art collection. He did this on top of editing and producing the Telegraph-Journal’s weekend supplement, Salon.
