Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Stories began circulating on social media early Wednesday evening. A gunman was spotted walking through a residential neighbourhood in Moncton's north end. Shots were fired, officers down. We immediately called in a reporter and videographer to head to scene. Editorial staff in Moncton and Fredericton worked the phones to gather information and coordinate coverage. Kate Letterick was first on the scene for CBC. This entry includes her first live report from the area under police lockdown. It aired at 9:45 AT on CBC News Network. The second item includes reports into The National from Melissa Oakley using a Dejero unit, Kate Letterick by phone from the lockdown and material from the RCMP news conference. We've also included the link to our digital coverage of the shootings and manhunt. Kate worked in a logistically challenging, dangerous and chaotic situation with determination to deliver information important to the public's interest and safety. CBC NB was the link to the community. Our coverage also included radio, web and a steady stream of social media reports (see CBC NB WEB file attached to see web coverage and our Twitter feed). |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: This coverage was undertaken with regular CBC NB resources. On top of gathering for the evening news, CBC NB was also tasked with meeting enormous national and international demands for reporter debriefs and television material. |
