Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The Coast's Hot Summer Guide is among our largest issues of the year, it's one that readers keep around until Labour Day as a colourful resource for planning their evenings and weekends. In a guide packed with festival listings, sporting events, swimming spots and street food we sought out unique and dynamic ways of presenting the overload of information—not to knock the beloved list, but we were hungry for alternative story forms. For "The ultimate road trip"—a feature aimed at getting people out of town to explore Nova Scotia—we looked to large-scale infographics for inspiration, playing off the idea of the maps that people would use on their getaways, distilled to the basic information. It needed just enough detail to inspire exploration. Editors Allison Saunders and Kyle Shaw researched some of the province's best offerings when it came to swimming, hiking, outdoor activities, eating and history, dividing the information by region (Cape Breton, or the South Shore for example), colour-coding the dozens of items into the categories Eat, Watch and Do. Lots of scribbling, note-taking, editing and a couple of drafts resulted in the two-page adventure kick-starter, designed by The Coast's production team Ryan Chisholm and Elliott Magill. At last summer's Association of Alternative Newsmedia annual conference, Jandos Rothstein—Creative Director for the Washington City Paper, a runner-up for World's Best Designed Newspaper from the Society for News Design—praised "The ultimate road trip" for its creativity, readability and clarity, using it as an example in his Enterprising Interiors session. |
