Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Attached you will find three submissions from Journal Pioneer editorial cartoonist Wayne Wright from 2014. In the first cartoon Wayne illustrated the further damage caused by P.E.I. Senator Mike Duffy to an already beleaguered Canadian Senate. In the second piece, Wayne drew a simple sketch of a dog looking at a Mountie’s campaign hat placed on a table covered by the maple leaf of the Canadian flag. It followed the funerals of the RCMP members shot and killed in Moncton, N.B. last year, one of which was a K-9 unit and whose dog tugged at the hearts of many making an appearance during the funeral. In the third submission, he tackles the issue of a veiled threat by the Irving empire to pull out of P.E.I. if the provincial government did not bend to their wishes and grant farmers deep-water wells to improve the size and shape of potatoes destined for the Irving-owned Cavendish Farms potato processing facility in New Annan, P.E.I. Many residents here fear the impact of deep-water wells could have on Island water reserves in the future. |
