Short explanation of the story and how it developed: On the morning of June 5, 2014, RCMP were involved in an active manhunt for the shooter who killed two RCMP officers and wounded two others in Moncton the previous evening. The community was in lockdown and in fear. We wanted to craft a program for noon that could respond to all developments, capture the mood, give insight into the manhunt and give the community an opportunity to talk about a traumatic experience. In the half hour we are submitting, we have tape from a late morning RCMP newsconference, context from a local reporter, a live interview with a Moncton resident in lockdown who had seen the gunman, an expert guest who could speak to the police manhunt that was underway, a live interview with a photographer who took pictures of the shooting scenes, a question from a caller and the beginning of our interview with an expert on rampage killings. The program continued with more calls and interviews from Moncton, but that programming is beyond the 30 minute limit for this entry. Our small team was able to deliver a compelling, developing story and keep the public informed about a dangerous situation in the community. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: We are a small but mighty team of two. Early in the morning of June 5, I requested extra help to cover the Moncton manhunt. An extra producer was assigned. |
