Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This was the first live CBC radio newscast, following the late night AC624 plane crash at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The entire 5 minute newscast was dedicated to the overnight events and the latest information. It was a compilation of first-hand accounts from reporters on the scene, as well as passengers on board and airport officials. This newscast was the product of hours of hard work by a CBC team at the airport.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

The biggest challenge for this story was the fact it broke late on a Saturday night. Reporters and other staff were called in to work by Carolyn Ray, who was assignment producer that weekend. Since she is also a reporter, she went to the airport to start gathering. Other staff soon followed. It was a coordinated effort in the middle of a blizzard. About 10 people came to work that night/early morning, even though they were not scheduled to work. This was a classic breaking news event where journalists rushed to tell the stories that needed to be told.
