Short explanation of the story and how it developed: "A Crisis in Rape Funding" is a story about a woman who was neglected by the provincial health care system. Angela MacIvor heard what happened through her contacts in the community. She tracked down the woman and asked her to talk about her experience, which she agreed to do with the hope that it prevents other rape victims from a similar experience. The story successfully caught the attention of government. The Minister of Health acknowledged there was a gap in the system, and even called the woman's story a "flash point" for government. Two weeks later, $700,000 was set aside in the Nova Scotia budget to address the issue. Sexual assault groups had been lobbying 8 years for government funding with no firm commitments prior to this story. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: It took three days to put this story together. Angela MacIvor went to Pictou to interview the woman at the centre of this story. She stopped on the way back to interview the sexual assault centre coordinator in Truro. She took a second day to research the issue, and a third day to piece it together for online and broadcast. No extra resources were needed. This story reached several CBC platforms including World Report, The National and CBC's As It Happens. |
