Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

A Nova Scotia fly tier's creativity and memories mingle at the vise during the deep, dark winter. The stunning "Luke Got His Wings" artistic salmon fly, used for the Winter 2015 Atlantic Salmon Journal cover, was tied by Bob Macdonald as a tribute fly to his late son and fishing companion who died in a tragic motocross accident in 2010. It has blue for his eyes, golden pheasant crest for his blond hair, and silver tinsel for the Atlantic salmon he liked to fish for. The many wings are for Luke's smile, his passing and where he is now. Photographed by Lloyd Lutes, it highlights the theme of the art of conservation and ties into Bob Macdonald's photo essay in this issue titled: "Six Salmon Flies & A Cover." Macdonald, who has been tying flies for over forty years, hopes his colourful, free-style flies motivate others to let their artistic imagination run wild at the vise. An ardent conservationist, he has also spent over a decade enhancing and restoring Atlantic salmon habitat on the rivers near his home in Mulgrave, N.S.. The decision to use muted color in the cover design brings out the three-dimensional quality, patterns and bold colors of this unique and extraordinarily fly.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

This project was entirely directed by Bob Macdonald. Although there was no cost to the Atlantic Salmon Journal (Bob and the photographer donated their time), the cover was shot and reshot numerous times by two different photographers against various backgrounds until the fly tier (Bob), the editor and the art director agreed on the desired effect.
