Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The Sackville River flows through some of Canada's most urbanized lands, which is why caring conservationists have had to develop innovative restoration techniques. Is your note pad ready? Using an allegorical spin, freelance writer Mike Allen describes the epic, danger-fraught journey of an Atlantic salmon named "Bud", from feeding grounds off Greenland to his "hometown" of Sackville, Nova Scotia, where "…high up in the watershed, spawned out yet still boss of the mean streets, (he) plans his next trip—even as (the author) plans (his) to meet him." For many years we have been following the restoration efforts on the Sackville River. As a prime Atlantic salmon stream flowing through a highly urbanized area (From Sackville, Nova Scotia to the Bedford Basin in Halifax) it was a ground zero testing site to see if years of abuse could be turned around by a group of dedicated volunteers. Mike Allen’s involvement with the river association coupled with his angling, writing and photography experience fused together in this story of hope on the going restoration of the Sackville River. "To those who care about such things—and there are a dedicated great many here who do—it's not uncommon to overhear modest comments comparing this urban salmon river with those of much better know cities, yes, even like the Thames in London and the Seine in Paris."
