Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

On November 13th, 2015, terrorists struck in Paris, killing dozens of people in cafés and in a concert hall. In New Brunswick, the attacks sparked both compassion and outright racism. It got really ugly online and offline. I felt I had to say something. In my weekly column, published three days after the attacks, I got into it by explaining how I was really having trouble finding words to talk about that tragedy. Then, explained that I was afraid. I said that I wasn’t afraid of the terrorists, but that I was afraid of us, that I was scared of seeing a rise in an anti-Muslim sentiment and of xenophobia. After exploring these questions, I concluded in saying that we really needed to give the terrorists the finger (a “doigt d’honneur” in French) by staying united.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I needed a few hours to write that column on the day before its publication. The judges may note that it is short. Most of L’Acadie Nouvelle’s columns are that size and run at approximately 325 words. Production itself didn’t cost anything extra to myself or to the paper, other that the weekly fee I get to write that column (150 $).
