Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

June 4 was the first anniversary of the shootings that killed three RCMP officers in Moncton, N.B. The solemn day had featured memorial speeches, a musical performance and the unveiling of a sculpture all in honour of fallen Constables David Ross, Fabrice Gevaudan and Doug Larche. That evening the Musical Ride performed at Magnetic Hill. Rachael Ross, widow of the late Const. Dave Ross was on the stage with other family members and dignitaries. Her son Austin was dressed in a miniature RCMP uniform and amidst the emotionally-laden performance, photographer Andrew Vaughan captured this touching mother-son moment as Rachael helped two-year-old Austin adjust his Stetson just so.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Photographer Andrew Vaughan completed the assignment alone, no special resources or overtime required.
