Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This extensive FOI/data piece is a follow-up to a similar piece published in 2013. Reporter Michael Tutton filed a request for condition reports on every bridge in Nova Scotia, and painstakingly combed through the data for months in order to compile not only the piece but the exhaustive interactive digital map that accompanied the story. The map brings the raw data to life, enabling users to find bridges in their own community and see what condition they're in - along with a description of the specific problems - and how that condition compares to the report from 2013. The story and video provided a narrative and exposition of the problem facing provincial engineers who must decide how to use annual funding to keep the bridges at least usable, but the map illustrates plainly the widespread and pressing nature of the infrastructure deficit in Nova Scotia.
