Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Imagine watching a lifetime of memories disappear while knowing a beloved pet is trapped inside a burning home with no chance of escape. The feeling of helplessness must be overwhelming - followed by despair. Bugle editor Jim Dumville raced to the scene of the devastating house fire in Canterbury, N.B., in late March and got this moving picture of firefighters comforting a man and woman who had lost their home, cat and all their possessions to a devastating fire. What is striking about the pic is the compassion the firefighters have for the Varney family as they watch their home burn. This picture draws you seamlessly to the foreground and then to the background. It shows both the strength of the firefighters and their gentleness. Thank you Anne Mooers Managing editor The Daily Gleaner
