Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Three crab fishermen were reported overdue on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 16th. The winds and waves were high. Visibility was low. Still, other fishers started the search to no avail. The RCMP and Search and Rescue were notified and also started to search. The weather deteriorated, hampering the search. At 1 p.m. the following day the missing fishermen were found dead in the waters of Placentia Bay. Their 23-foot speed boat had capsized. That’s where NTV’s Heather Gillis picked up the story. Warf-side in Southern Harbour a friend remembers one of the men lost at sea. Next door in Arnold’s Cove, a local fisherman describes the dangerous sea conditions. And a dockside inspector explains why the men were in a small open boat, trying to catch their quota, with gale force winds forecast. They also had a larger, safer fishing boat tied up – something regulations banned the men from using. It’s a story that hits too close to home for people in this province who make their living from the sea. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: One reporter, a cameraman and a dejero were the resources used to create this live report. We fed the video back to our station by dejero. We time coded clips, and fed the shots in the order we wanted them to air. |
