Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Here's a quick snapshot of how I went about doing the stories I submitted, and some of the reasons I chose these stories and some of the challenges of doing them as a one woman shooting, editing, writing, and performing reporter! Snow plows: In the crazy winter of 2015, this was one of the many days of frustration on the streets and highways. In this case the streets in a local subdivision were impassable as they were totally unplowed. I had to park about 1/2 a kilometre away and trudge in with my gear. What I like about this story is that the plows arrived during my shoot. It shows the progression from being snowed-in to being freed. It was easier walking back too! I really got a work out that day, regardless. One of the "perks" of being a VJ. Gym membership not required. Nursing Home Provincial Election Voting: I had heard about nursing home polls but wondered how they would work and if we would ever get access to this process. About a month before the election I put in a request, but still, no approval from officials, even by election day. Then I got the go-ahead, at the very last minute, about 2pm. It was a real challenge to gather, write and edit by air time on election day. But I very much like the story as it shows a side of voting we don't often see... ensuring the vote is made accessible to all. Food Bank User: The CBC Turkey drive and our daily news shows often do stories on food bank use -speaking to managers or people who donate. I wanted to profile a person who needs it. I put a sign up at the food bank asking if anyone would talk to me. The food bank itself didn't want to ask anyone, they worried in their position of power it might cause someone to say yes, even if they didn't want to. But Wendy saw my sign and called me and spoke from the heart. At first she asked to be anonymous but then changed her mind after we talked a while. I really enjoyed hearing and telling her personal story. And I think putting a face on all the donation talk was important.
