Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

We were approached by the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies and pitched the idea of writing a tourism piece about their camp in northern Labrador. We knew that the opportunity to "see" and "experience" this camp would appeal to our readers, but we wanted to take the story beyond its obvious eye-candy attraction... What does it take to operate a remote adventure travel operation? Is it a viable business? What kind of ROI does it offer to its investors? What does the success, or failure, of the enterprise mean for the aboriginal community in Labrador? The resulting piece surprised us with the depth of its revelations, from the striking beauty of Labrador (NOT all ice and snow) to the complexity of operating the camp (only open 7 weeks a year) to the urbanity of Nain and the innovative resilience of the Inuit people as they discover new ways to live off the land.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Freelance journalist Stephanie Porter was hired to research and write the story. Transportation to/from Labrador plus accommodations in Goose Bay were paid for by Atlantic Business Magazine. Accommodations at Torngat Base Camp were courtesy of the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies. Photos were provided by NGC staff - there wasn't enough room/availability for us to send a photographer and a writer. It was a challenging assignment because of weather conditions which continuously modified the window of opportunity to travel to Base Camp. And, when she finally arrived, our writer became fogged in and unable to participate in many of the planned activities or even know when exactly she would be going home.
