Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Like many in Nova Scotia, I’d followed the news stories about the Armoyan divorce from hell in the media and been curious about what would make a successful developer like Vrege Armoyan defy the courts to his own detriment, becoming what the papers called one of “Canada’s worst deadbeat dads." Last summer, I tracked him down to Lebanon where he had settled beyond the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia courts. He agreed to talk to me — the first time he’d spoken about his side of the story other than in legal briefs. Our goal with the piece was not to take one side or the other in the divorce, but to provide readers with a deeper understanding of this human tragedy without becoming salacious or gossip-mongering.
