Short explanation of the story and how it developed: This was one of those stories I was assigned rather than one I suggested. Dr. Andrew Furey was about to be named Innovator of the Year at the Atlantic Business Magazine’s annual Top 50 CEOs gala. My assignment was to explain who he was and what he’d done to deserve to be the years top “innovator.” Since such an award would normally go to a business person and not a doctor doing good in a country like Haiti, my first task was to understand why he’d been selected and then attempt to cast what he’d done in the context of the award. The more I researched, the more convinced I became that Furey was an excellent choice and, as importantly, his story deserved to be better known. This was one of those “feel good” assignments that felt good to do. |
