Short explanation of the story and how it developed: In the early hours of the morning on March 29, 2015, in the middle of a snowstorm, Air Canada flight 624 coming from Toronto into Halifax crashed while trying to land. Later investigation would reveal the plane came in too low, clipped an antenna array and lost its landing gear before hitting the ground well before the runway and skidding to a stop. Significant damage was done to the plane's wing and nose, and dozens were injured -- but thankfully nobody was killed. This submission includes team coverage encompassing three full reports (one each from Julia Wong, Mayya Assouad and Marieke Walsh) and other updates that aired on the day of the crash. Camera operator Paul Dewitt shot the report for Assouad while Rebecca Lau produced and anchored the newscast. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: Videojournalist Julia Wong drove through the snowstorm in the early morning hours to get to the airport ahead of other media and worked through the night. She spoke to passengers, updated social media and filed stories for broadcast and web to bring the audience the latest information as the situation unfolded. Global News provided team coverage locally and nationally via its website throughout the day Sunday, and later broadcast a full lineup of reports and updates. Journalists at the airport had to collect interviews, gather information, shoot their own visuals and set up live streams for various television and online markets. Events unfolded quickly throughout the day and every update had to be filed as soon as possible. The stunning visuals of the plane, both at the time of the crash and the following day, combined with interviews with affected passengers and key personnel at the airport and local hospitals, along with online coverage that reached hundreds of thousands, all came together to provide viewers with a complete package of need-to-know information. |
