Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Reporter and columnist Brent Mazerolle has written firsthand and extensively about a 2014 shooting rampage that killed three Moncton Mounties, wounded two others and left thousands of people scrambling for cover in a normally quiet suburb. He has also written extensively about the aftermath of the incident. When a columnist from a national newspaper began questioning issues of justice, crime and punishment surrounding the gunman's sentence, Mazerolle argued abstract discussions of such things are a luxury only for those who have not been victims of or witness to violent crime. |
