Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Fiery Crash by Keith Gosse/The Telegram Our newsroom received a call that a car had driven off an overpass onto the road below and crashed into a concrete retaining wall. I was sent to the scene to cover the accident and on the way there, I heard over the fire department channel that witnesses were reporting the car had burst into flames. Getting closer to the scene, I could see heavy black smoke pouring out from under the overpass. As I arrived the firemen were just beginning to hose down the car and they were trying to access the passenger compartment of the car as bystanders looked on. I drove past the burning car and saw the worst scene possible. I knew this was going to be a fatal accident. I parked as close to the scene as I could and took these photos before police arrived and asked us to move a little further away. I captured the photos of the smoking and steaming car as firefighters continued to hose down the wreck. I was quickly told by police that there was one fatality and that the victim was still in the car. |
