Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Most people in New Brunswick have heard the story of the Mount Allison student who left a party in downtown Sackville late one night in 2012 and disappeared. However after nearly two years many, including me, had forgotten all about Chris Metallic. The idea for this documentary came from an interview on CBC Moncton's Information Morning with Chris Metallic's brother Spencer Isaac who was receiving an award from Mount Allison for his work starting an aboriginal support group for students. In the interview Spencer talked about how their mother is still searching for Chris, and how he is trying to move on and find something positive from this tragedy. He also talked about the letters he writes to his big brother. I collected my interviews with Spencer over a three month period and after many phone calls and conversations, I was able to interview his mother Mandy on the eve of the second anniversary of Chris' disappearance. I worked on this documentary as part of a CBC mentorship project which paired me with producer Karen Levine of The Sunday Edition. Her advice was invaluable and I learned a great deal from the experience. Answer Back, Brother is an intimate documentary about loss and grief, and a remarkable young man who tries to help his broken mother as he finds his own way through both. It aired nationally on The Sunday Edition and regionally on Atlantic Voice, Shift New Brunswick and was aired in parts on New Brunswick morning shows. |
