Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This story involved the intended demolition of a closed power plant in Dalhousie, N.B. There was much lead-up to this. There were technical press conferences for the media, and a local not-for-profit was allowed to sell tickets on pushing the button to knock down one of the stacks. Much to everyone’s bemusement, the plan did not go off right. The main boiler building did not fall as anticipated, and the first smoke stack simply fell onto its base, rather than topple over. This story involved much field work -- that is where we were, in a field. First online versions were filed from the field. The story was of considerable local interest. First, because the explosion was something never done on this scale here; second, it had been a major local industry; third, the initial failure brought all manner of speculation. This was the first of two explosion stories. The second one, in September, was not as interesting, as everything came down exactly as planned.
