Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Halifax Magazine has a long history of only putting people on the cover, so a cover focused on a dog was a real departure for us. We had intended to feature the dog's owner on the cover, as per our usual format, but on the day of the photo shoot, Twiggy the puppy stole the show. She posed patiently for pictures and was a general ham. As soon as we got back to the office and reviewed the pictures, this one jumped out at us. The warmth and expressiveness in Twiggy's eyes really seem to resonate for readers. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: The biggest challenge with this cover was the time of year. We were shooting in late April for a June cover. The snow had barely melted and it definitely didn't look like summer. Fortunately, we had a bright clear morning for the shoot and by focusing tightly on the puppy, Bruce was able to create a cover image that doesn't look seasonal or dated. |
