Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

One of the best parts of working at East Coast Living is reading the pitches we receive from designers. They’re always excited to show-off their latest work. On this cover, the designer was also the homeowner, which helped us stage an aspirational cover to draw our readers in. Mallory Lennon’s two-storey revamp was an opportunity to highlight the unique talents of a New Brunswick designer, and share her DIY tips that our readers can adopt in their own homes. The kitchen of this Fredericton home was practically built for one of our covers. The ceiling offers a large neutral space for the masthead, while the solid colours offered plenty of opportunities for unobstructed cover lines. In keeping with our DIY goals, Mallory’s chalkboard wall tells our readers that inside they’ll discover tips they can take out of the magazine and use themselves. Additionally, each issue of East Coast Living features a “Special Feature” badge that highlights another DIY opportunity in the magazine. This issue’s badge reads “Flavourful winter salads”. We chose this story to highlight on the cover because we know our readers love our recipe stories. It’s also a story readers wouldn’t expect as salad is associated with summer, not winter. This presents another opportunity to tease the readers into our magazine.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Like all small magazines in our region, our ability to tell the story is limited only by our budget. We are very fortunate to work with photographers who understand this limitation, but want to work with us to produce something great.
