Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

In the winter of 2020, CBC News began the groundwork on a nation-wide series focusing on intimate partner violence. Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the highest domestic violence rates in all of Canada. Reporter Ariana Kelland wanted to tell stories from the people directly affected: the children left behind from domestic homicide, the women who faced their abusers in court, and the people on the frontlines of combating intimate partner violence. Through speaking with dozens of women, Kelland and producer Rob Antle published and aired nearly ten stories. Kelland and videographer Sherry Vivian travelled to Burlington, Ont., in the winter of 2020 to interview Jessica Donald, one of three women who reported their boyfriend, Kevin Evans, to police. CBC went to court for months in order to tell Donald's story using her name and face. The result was a long-form television piece with all three women who shared for the first time their experience with abuse, the justice system, and finding themselves again. Three people whose mothers were murdered by men opened up about how domestic homicide changed their childhoods. Kelland went back over the last 20 years, combining the names of all women killed by their partners, and then reached out to their surviving children for this story. Finally, Stopping Domestic Violence highlighted the people who dedicate their careers and time to stopping intimate partner violence. This story included police officers on both sides of the island of Newfoundland along with an inside look at a local womens's shelter.
