Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Time Ticking Down on Search for Missing OceanGate Submersible - June 22, 2023 Time was of the essence on June 22, 2023. The Titan submersible had less than an hour of oxygen left on board as crews continued their search for the five missing souls. That’s when the beauty of radio came into play. While the clock was ticking, the world was looking for on the spot, up-to-the-minute, immediate coverage. As the sole reporter for VOCM News, I was there bright and early, bringing listeners from around the province and around the world to St. John’s Harbour. Though it is early in my journalism career, this may go down as one of the biggest stories I will have ever covered as it was one of the biggest international stories of 2023. I am proud of how I was able to bring our listeners on the spot coverage through hourly live radio hits, photos, video, social media posts, and up-to-date online articles. Strike Begins at Memorial University - January 30, 2023 Radio is theatre for the mind. While reporting live from the picket line at Memorial University, the sound of striking members allowed us to bring our listeners to the front lines of this unfolding story on the frigid morning of January 30, 2023. This strike affected tens of thousands of students and workers in our province, meaning it was ever so important to keep people informed as the story progressed. I took to the large picket line by myself, providing our listeners frequent live reports from the midst of the action. I was also responsible for relaying the information through numerous social posts by shooting my own photos, video, writing online web stories, and conducting interviews with striking university faculty members. Through that, we were able to keep our listeners up to date with frequent up to the minute information. Fans Criticize Blue Jays Management After Playoff Series Sweep - October 5, 2023 VOCM News has a wide reach, and instead of interviewing baseball analysts or a dedicated sports journalist, I, a young female journalist, was called upon to provide sports news and analysis to our listeners. As a female, being able to report on major sports stories allows me to continue breaking barriers and stereotypes. Having only one Major League Baseball team in Canada, the story of how the Toronto Blue Jays’ hopes of winning the 2023 World Series were destroyed was something even casual sports fans were talking about on the morning of October 5, 2023. I watched the entire game, soaked up every minute of it in order to relay the best information to our listeners.
