Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

CBC host Jonna Brewer and videographer Pierre Fournier collaborated on this story about the Atlantic Ballet's groundbreaking production, Pisuwin. Pisuwin is a creation of Atlantic Ballet's director and choreographer Igor Dobrovolskiy and multi-disciplinary artist Possesom Paul of Sitansisk First Nation, set to the music of composer Jeremy Dutcher, a member of Neqotkuk First Nation. Jonna coordinated with the three artists and Pierre recorded the dancers during a technical rehearsal for the ballet. Getting everyone together for interviews was not an easy task, as the artists were deeply involved in the production. Jonna persisted, and took time to record fulsome interviews with each artist. She also took great care in editing her audio piece to make sure it reflected each of the artist's contributions to the ballet, allowing them to tell their stories, in their own words. Pierre's video incorporated those elements, along with his stunning visuals. In Possesom Paul's words, "To have this many Indigenous people in a production is actually huge in Canada. I don't know if you've looked at the landscape. Because this space has not been reserved for us in the past, we've had to expand into these spaces...this is the start of something big." Through these pieces, our audience learns about a Wolastoq legend, along with the story behind this first of its kind production that's shining a spotlight on Indigenous talent in Canada. We received glowing feedback from the ballet company, audience members and the community. The ballet performed sold out shows across the Atlantic region in the spring and offered an encore tour in the fall.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Pierre and Jonna spent a day at the ballet studio and rehearsal space, gathering interviews and sounds and images of the rehearsal. They each took several hours to write, edit and mix their pieces.
