Short explanation of the story and how it developed: This commentary addresses the catastrophic decline of white pine on the island of Newfoundland. The species used to be a defining characteristic of the Newfoundland landscape - to the point of being referenced in the provincial anthem - yet today has become scarce as a result of logging and poor environmental stewardship by the provincial government. Banoub, a writer for The Independent, first learned of the decline of white pine through discussions with a local carpenter. In the spring of 2021 Banoub took a canoe trip down the Upper Humber River, and was struck by the absence of white pine. He wrote the commentary following this canoe trip, as part of his ongoing efforts to come to terms with the contradictory tendencies of settlers in this place. On the one hand, settler communities have wrought a destructive impact on the Newfoundland landscape; yet on the other, NL’ers profess a love of the outdoors - including the white pine - which is reflected in popular culture, songs and stories. The complexity of this reality is what drives this elegantly written and well-researched commentary. |
