Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Karrson Bennett was supposed to be facing a jury trial for second-degree murder, and there were two courtrooms of jurors on the fifth floor of the Saint John law courts waiting to be processed. But instead, I caught wind that lawyers were waiting for a judge a floor below, and I was in my seat by the time that Bennett pleaded guilty to part of the allegation that he had killed a toddler. Over the next two months, I attended nine days of testimony and arguments to answer what happened in those fatal minutes, with the end result of Bennett receiving New Brunswick's second-harshest second-degree murder sentence.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I was the Telegraph-Journal's court reporter, and I attended all the hearings in this matter as well as consulted court files and archive stories from past court reporters. I also covered other court cases as well as other Saint John stories over the time period.
