Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Homelessness can be a polarizing issue, so with the Advocate set out to report on an encampment in New Glasgow — something the town hasn’t seen since the Great Depression — we felt it was important to humanize the perspective, and speak with people who understood the experience, rather than just the usual “Neighbours concerned” type of story. Reporter Kevin Adshade made several visits to the area, finally building a relationship with someone recently housed who had been living rough and could share their experiences, offering readers a different and more complete perspective on the housing crisis.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Like many community newspapers, the Advocate has weathered the tumult of the last few years with a small and efficient newsroom. With people pulled in many directions, doing a more in-depth story like this requires the reporter to put in an extra effort, often working outside regular hours, and multi-tasking to arrange appropriate photography.
