Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The profile of Fortis was a rather simple proposal but became very time consuming in reality. The main resource and cost involved was time, with Atlantic Business Magazine editor Dawn Chafe not just allowing but actually encouraging what rolled into months of research for the piece, including review of the work of local historians and repeat visits to the Centre for Newfoundland Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The latter allowed for review daily news stories in the form of paper clippings from throughout the company's history, with the stories not available online. Communications leaders at Fortis Inc. did ultimately warm up to the idea of a profile of the company, offering interviews with two of the current, senior executives. There were additional requests and interviews, some credited and several on background and used to verify information in older news reports. Nearing the end of the project, the piece nearly ready, it turned out the company did not have a photo of the earliest boards of directors. A single photo was found by the reporter in an older book publication, and ABM set about tracking down the photographer from the time (about 35 years ago!), finding them and paying to license the image for print and online, to offer readers a better sense of change at the company's board level then-to-now, in addition to the story of long-term management and business acquisitions settled in the c-suite.
