Short explanation of the story and how it developed: It started with a call one of my colleagues got from an old friend. She said there was a new tennis prodigy on her radar, and that she’s got what it takes. After it was pitched to the newsroom, I offered to do an audio treatment on it, while my colleague did a digital treatment. We both went down to the facility where the prodigy, Renata Reut, practiced and spoke to all her cheerleaders–her coach, her mom, and a woman who was in charge of fundraising. All of them were singing compliments of Renata. When I spoke to Renata herself, she was shy–she was 12 after all. So we walked around, I asked about her friends, the shows she watched, her favourite foods– we didn't touch the subject of tennis. And when she was warming up to me, I asked her what the sound of the tennis ball meant to her. The way she responded was like she was checking off a list, as if she was hearing the ball as she spoke–that is where I got the idea to start my audio item. I found this story didn't end up just being about a young girl with a lot of talent, but more like the pressures that comes with being so good, so young. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: This was a project I had to balance with the daily responsibilities of being an associate producer on Information Morning Fredericton. Our team consists of host, producer and associate producer. So while taking time out of my day to go to the tennis court, I had lots of other chase work waiting for me back at my desk. Plus, I had to balance other daily chases while cutting, mixing and voicing the item. No additional money was available to complete the story. It took about a week to turn the item around. |
