Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Cassidy McMackon landed in Halifax immediately after wrapping a one-year term as editor-in-chief of The Queen’s Journal, the student-run newspaper at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. After a short internship with allNovaScotia, Cassidy joined The Canadian Press’s Halifax bureau, where she spent six months reporting breaking news and writing feature stories about the region. Cassidy was especially interested in providing additional analysis and context on gender-based violence in Nova Scotia after three women were killed by their male partners in the fall. The stories submitted here are a small sampling of Cassidy's 2024 work with CP but they speak to her drive as a journalist and her commitment to telling important stories. Her work caught the attention of others at the wire service and she continues her work for us, including editing duties on the night desk and reporting for the Arts and Life department.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

In Halifax, Cassidy was part of a team of five reporters, who work closely with correspondents in Fredericton and St. John's, N.L. Together they are expected to keep the wire filled with print stories, video, audio and daily regional broadcast reports
