Short explanation of the story and how it developed: “Maestro in the Maritimes” by Jericho Knopp, March 24. Throughout its entire history, Saltscapes has shared the stories of artists finding their inspiration in Atlantic Canada. So when “the Godfather of Canadian Hip-Hop,” Maestro Fresh Wes, relocated to Saint John, N.B., we saw an opportunity to tell a story about an artist in a medium we’d never covered, while staying true to our mission. An experienced arts writer, Jericho thoughtfully interviewed Maestro about his family, his inspiration, and adjusting to his new life on the East Coast. It opened a new perspective to readers who have a very different idea of what a Maritime musical artist is. |
