Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This story started as an investigation into the number of rooming houses being demolished in downtown Moncton but quickly became a three-part series looking at the very complex issue of homelessness and affordable housing, which are directly tied to mental health and addiction. It was a challenge to present three focused stories that included people who are directly affected. This series required spending a great deal of time with outreach workers and first responders. By spending that time, the reporter was able to build a relationship which allowed her to eventually connect with people who are or have been homeless. This series brought attention to the affordable housing crisis in Moncton, sparked many follow-up stories, and led to government and private funding for two 'Out-of-the Cold' shelters for people in Moncton who are homeless. As a result of this reporting, CBC plans to host a public forum in March to discuss affordable housing and homelessness with the larger New Brunswick community.
