Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Reporter Chris Halef knew the two year anniversary of the death of Cody Glode was approaching. After struggling with depression for years, the rising star in the local mixed martial arts scene died by suicide at the age of 20 on March 2, 2016. Halef started contacting members of Glode's family, driving to Truro from Halifax dozens of times to conduct multiple interviews with his parents and sister. He also spoke with the director of mental health and addiction with the Nova Scotia Health Authority and a mental health advocate to discuss the current state of the mental health care system in Nova Scotia. The day before the piece was published, he was invited to attend a sacred Indigenous sweat lodge ceremony to commemorate the memory Glode where his family gave Halef their blessing to post the story.
