Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The Riverview High Royals have never won a provincial football championship in their 50 years of existence. They have a winning record almost every year, finish at or near the top of the standings each season, and have sent three players to the Canadian Football League, but have never been able to win it all. Their rivals from Tantramar Regional High School in Sackville have won it nine times, including four in a row. Two of those recent championships came at the expense of the Royals. If the Titans could win it with an enrolment of just 423 students, why can’t the Royals capture a crown with 1,120 students at their school? Derek Haggett spoke to coaches and players, current and past, including the lone player from Riverview still in the CFL to figure out why. This was a personal story for Derek. In 1987, he was a rookie with the Royals. That year, the Royals finished in top spot in the regular season only to lose to the dreaded Titans in the first round of the playoffs, a loss he says still haunts him. For this story, he went back to his old school and stood on the field that he played 30 years earlier to talk to the kids about their chances just a few days before history would repeat and, once again, they would get crushed by their rivals.
