Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

There are dozens of vacant buildings scattered throughout the city of Saint John. In 2018, fires started in several of these buildings, usually forcing the evacuation of neighbouring occupied buildings and causing those residents to wonder if the fire will spread to their home. This photo depicts one of the few vacant building fires which occurred during the day on May 30. Fire crews battled the blaze for hours with smoke completely blanketing the street at times. While onlookers scurried away from the thick black smoke, the fire crews simply continued on as if it wasn’t there, leading to the scene in this photo of the fire Chief and scene commander illuminated by a ray of sunshine which managed to pierce the smoke. To make this photo, I had to shift my position relative to the two chiefs until they were framed properly, then time it just right to get the exact moment the ray of sunshine hit them, without disrupting the firefighting efforts.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

One or two hours on the scene and expenses for driving distance.
