Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

In the midst of a heat wave bringing temperatures well above normal, I was assigned to take some photos of how Saint John residents were dealing with the heat. After failing to find any families using city-run splash pads, I made my way to one of the freshwater beaches in the area where I came across plenty of people keeping cool in the water and lounging in the shade. In the middle of it all, a father and son caught my eye as they were splashing each other in the water. After taking a few photos of them splashing each other and not being satisfied with the results, I decided to wade into the water myself and asked the boy to splash me instead of his father. To really make it feel like the viewer is there getting splashed themselves, I got in close with a wide angle and used some fill flash to really highlight the water droplets frozen by the fast shutter speed. The result, I think, is a photo which brings the viewer to the scene more effectively than a photo which shows a father and son splashing each other.
